Empowering Patients for Individualized Care (EPIC)
The EPIC Diabetes Conference began in 2017 to provide a one-day interactive, supportive, and uplifting experience for patients, families, friends, and caregivers (school nurses, health care providers, etc.) of those with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The conference is presented by the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes.
This event brings people together in a supportive environment to help each other take care of diabetes physically and emotionally. Patients have the opportunity to connect with Colorado’s top endocrinologists and diabetes specialists in order to improve their care. Connecting with other attendees creates a stronger diabetes community and helps people realize that they are not alone with this disease.
By learning about the latest and upcoming diabetes care and technology and medications, patients can determine a management pathway that works for their individual care.
Reviews
“I loved the speakers and hearing what they had to say about diabetes. This was my first conference and I had such a positive experience that I will be returning every year!”
“The speakers were very knowledgeable and professional, but were open and positive . They were genuinely interested in our questions.”
“I feel like we learned something in each workshop. Plus it was so nice to see so many in the same place in life as us. Being in a rural area with no support group, you can feel so alone.”
“Thanks for making this conference available for such a reasonable price. What a great service to the diabetes community.”
“My favorite part was just the environment that I was in. I felt like for a few hours, the whole world was centered around me and my illness and I never felt out of place or a burden, even my non diabetic family felt included and heard.”
“It was awesome sharing and hearing each others stories and giving advice and encouragement to hopefully help each other that are living with diabetes of any type”
“I was just so impressed by how well organized the conference was! The topics were all relevant (I had trouble picking) and all of the staff and presenters were wonderfully helpful! I can’t wait to attend future conferences!”

“Conference was very hopeful and positive! I learned new exercise information, hypo unawareness info, but mostly I learned that we are not alone”

The Center was funded by Marvin Davis, in 1978, and is generously supported by the Children’s Diabetes Foundation.
Clinicians, clinical researchers, and basic biomedical scientists work at the BDC to find the most effective treatment, prevention, and cure for type 1 diabetes. The Center provides state-of-the-art diabetes care to 3,600 children and 2,400 adults with diabetes from the Rocky Mountain Region as well as receiving national and international referrals. We also provide inpatient care to patients who are seen at the Children’s Hospital Colorado with any type of diabetes.
The Center’s faculty teach the medical, physician assistant, nursing, and dental students on campus. Residents and endocrinology fellows train at the Center on elective rotations. Basic science faculty members provide mentorship to pre-doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows from around the world.
